30 days and change: Day 6

DAY SIX: When you were young, what did you want to be when you grew up? How close did you come to pursuing that?

Word Count: 480 Words

When I think about the many things I wanted to be when I grew up, I can’t even think about just one. Growing up with a huuuuuuuge imagination, I wanted to be any and all things. From a “famous person” to a lounge singer, the list never ended. Here are a few that stick up in my head, lol.

1.) Meteorologist (A Weather Man): My dad loves news and weather. We watched so much news and weather that I knew I’d be a weatherman. I used to get so excited about watching the weather and seeing the interactive weather maps show up on TV, amazed at how the imagery shows up on the green screen in the studio. I imitated many meteorologists at such a young age that I could be a chief meteorologist for WSOC-TV. Needless to say, I didn’t come close to this career. I applied and was accepted to the Carolina Broadcasting School, but I couldn’t afford it then, so my dream was deferred. lol

2.) Radio Personality: I really wanted to be a radio personality for a while. I wanted my own show with guests, theme song/music, and faithful listeners. The radio station where I grew up (Coast 97.3) was our hip-hop and R&B station and was a constant source of inspiration. Years later, I got to job shadow at the radio station with Big-B during my senior year of high school. As far as a career, I didn’t have a career in radio, but I’ve dabbled with interviewing and broadcasting throughout my life. I even had my own podcast for a little bit.

3.) “Famous”: I wanted to be famous for an even larger chunk of my life. I was so obsessed with the rich and the famous. But most importantly, just the famous. My brother, who is about 14 years older than me, immersed me in MTV, VH1, and MTV2, which had me longing for a taste of Hollywood, California. These early teachings still fill my brain with dreams that, in today’s society, don’t feel so far away.

  1. I auditioned for MTV’s Real Worlds final season and made it to an in-person casting call.

  2. I got get great screen time on a tv show called “Shots Fired

  3. I got to extra on “Good Behavior” with Michelle Dockery

  4. I got to extra on set of the movie “Bolden”.

4.) Music Video Director: Piggybacking off of #3, MTV taught me an appreciation for music videos and the art that is the curation of them. One of my favorite music video directors Dave Meyers who was super influential in the early 2000’s til now throttled my love music videos. Some of my favorite music videos from Dave’s brain are…

  • Britney Spears - Lucky

  • Outkast - B.O.B.

  • Janet Jackson - All for You

  • Usher - You Remind Me

  • Missy Elliott - One Minute Man

  • Missy Elliot - Work It

  • Missy Elliot - Gossip Folks

  • Missy Elliot - Pass That Dutch

  • Missy Elliot - Lose Control

  • Arian Grande - God Is A Woman

  • Ariana Grande - No Tears Left to Cry

  • Victoria Monet - Alright
