Title: “mama moon”

Medium: Digital Collage

Inspiration: "Mama Moon" draws inspiration from the profound connection between humanity and the celestial body that graces our night sky. The moon, a silent guardian of our oceans and symbol of guidance, is a metaphorical mother figure, watching over us with a protective gaze. This piece reflects the maternal love passed down through generations, a legacy of strength and nurturing that flows from mother to child and from generation to generation.

Concept: In "Mama Moon," the imagery of a black mother guiding her child is juxtaposed with the celestial and earthly elements of the moon and sky. Just as the moon influences the tides and rhythms of nature, so does the maternal figure influence her children's lives, shaping their paths with wisdom and care. By fusing the elements of sky and earth, this artwork celebrates the interconnectedness of the natural world and the bonds of familial love.

Technique: The technique employed in creating "Mama Moon" is a digital collage method known as "digital cutting." Similar to traditional collage and scrapbooking, this process involves meticulously removing backgrounds from images using digital tools, such as an Apple Pencil and the software Procreate. Through this technique, disparate elements are seamlessly brought together to create a cohesive and visually striking composition that merges the earthly and celestial realms.

Educational Philosophy

I firmly believe that learning is not a solitary endeavor but a communal journey that thrives on collaboration, dialogue, and shared experiences. Education is fueled by curiosity, exploration, and critical inquiry (asking questions that are sometimes hard), where learners (both children & adults) contribute their unique lived experiences, perspectives, and talents to the learning environment.

My educational philosophy connects to Paulo Freire's notion of education as a practice of freedom. I believe in the transformative power of teaching and learning to reflect and affirm diverse perspectives and experiences as a tool for liberation and social change. Education should not just be bankable knowledge but a vehicle to empower all to critically engage with the world around them, interrogate the things we’ve “always known,” and imagine the possibilities. Whether in K-12 classrooms, the online adult learning environment, or the community, I prioritize the creation of inclusive spaces where all learners feel seen, heard, and valued.
